Deborah: A Prophetess and Judge

Topic: Theology Passage: Judges 4:1-5–4:31
While women did not hold any public leadership roles, we find several examples of such women leading God’s people, both, in the Old and New Testaments. The biblical writers did not appear to be anxious about the role these women played. In today’s story we have Deborah functioning as a prophetess and as a judge. She held the office of judge, leading the people of Israel into battle, and functioning as the highest legal office holder. She was also a prophetess. This means that while she was holding her office, Deborah was the primary means through which God communicated with the people.
